How to Choose an Appropriate Domain Name

A good domain name is an important part of the success of your website or blog.  It is especially important to choose an appropriate domain name if you are using your website to promote a business or to generate revenue.  There are several things that you should take into consideration when selecting a domain name.

It is best if you purchase a domain name rather than using one of the free domain name services.  Most free domain names are actually just sub domains and as such do not properly reflect your business or website.  You will be better able to create a strong professional appearance if you use a paid domain name for your website or blog.

When you are looking to choose an appropriate domain name, you will want to select a name that reflects the purpose of your business or blog.  In most cases, you will want to select a domain name that matches the name of your actual business or the title of your blog or website.

Sometimes the name that you want will already be taken.  In a case like this, you should begin thinking of other names that would reflect the purpose of your website.  You could also change the spelling just a bit in order to have a domain name that is still much like that of your business.  For example, if your business is called Easy Cash, you could try using the domain name ezcash.com.

You might want to try using a hyphenated name if it is really important to have your entire business name in your domain.  This is something to try only if the actual name is not currently available. If your business is called ‘Finding Great Cars,’ you could try opting for the domain name:  finding-great-cars.com.   Just keep in mind that people who are typing in an email address sometimes will forget to use hyphens or place them in the wrong spot.

In most cases, you do not want a domain name that is too long.  If a domain name has too many characters it can be difficult for people to remember.  There is also more room for error when an Internet user must type a long domain name.  Of course, you want a domain name to be long enough that it properly reflects the name of your website so do not go to short.

You will need to determine which domain name extensions to use when purchasing a domain name.  It is often best to purchase domain name that will be reflected as domainname.com or domainname.co.uk if your have a UK based website.  Most website users think of those domain names first when trying to find a website of interest.

It is sometimes a good idea to purchase more than one domain name extension.  This will make it more likely that an Internet user will be able to find your website or blog even if they are not sure of an extension.  You can also purchase multiple domain name extensions to prevent other websites from using the same name as your own with the only difference being the extension at the end.

Take your time when selecting a domain name for your website in order to choose an appropriate domain name that will make your website a success
